Look at these Guys!
Watching Future Islands perform on Letterman is required to give their music context. Lead singer Samuel T. Herring howls, shimmies, and shakes his way through “Seasons (Waiting on You),” the bizarreness of his impassioned and stuttering performance only matched by the unabashed earnestness of the lyrics. While this description may sound somewhat pejorative, what may seem to be Future Islands’ weaknesses are in fact their strengths. More than anything else, Welmers is undeniably charismatic, and watching this video the first time left me transfixed. Like many other things I find myself into these days, I don’t know if my attraction to Future Islands is rooted in irony or genuineness. Maybe this dichotomy never really made sense anyway. Welcome to the post-postmodern era.
