Review of FKA Twigs

Taste 10.06.2014

My two favorite albums of the year are both by ethereal girls. I got hypnotized last year by FKA twigs’ dizzying ballad “Water Me” and fell completely under her spell with LP1. Combining the best elements of R&B, soul, electro, and modern pop music in general, the girl Formerly Known As twigs kills it on her debut with more soul-rending ballads about love and loss and making it on your own.

I wish I had a vocabulary that could describe the magic Warpaint created on their self-titled album. It’s such hazy, dreamy yet danceable psych-pop delivered by maybe the coolest four chicks in recent band memory that it’s hard to figure out if the best reaction to their music is mumble-singing along, shaking your hips, or just chilling in the background. Long live the ethergirls.
