Ty Segall & LaLuz @ Thalia Hall, Chicago

Think 12.11.2014

You know what’s the absolute best day for Ty Segall to swing through your town? The day your city official declares DAVID BOWIE DAY. Literally everything just added up right here. The show got kicked off by La Luz, probably the glided future of surf-rock/doo-wop hybrid sounds, who, who-could-have-imagined, sound even better live than on your record player. During their set, Mikal Cronin was walking through the audience, even stopping to chat with FP Midwest Editor Jordan Mainzer, setting off an erratic spur of jealousy in me that I attempted to release by yelling at some bro for wearing a stupid neon t-shirt. THEN, Ty Segall begins his set, melting the faces off everyone in the room so that I could no longer tell the bros from the stoners (there were a lot, I may have gotten a bit second-hand high there was so much smell of grass) from the wannabes and we all just evaporated into a massive puddle of people with skeletons that danced to his groovy tunes, bro. For the encore, Ty played mostly a self-curated mix of Bowie tunes including “Queen Bitch” among others while the girls from La Luz crowd surfed and I basically chastised myself the entire time for living so far from the West Coast. -Kati Heng
